Hexcrawl25 – Week Zero

Namaste Mothernuggets!

So today I was introduced to the concept of Hexcrawl25, you can find out all about it here: https://maatlocksdndtable.com/hexcrawl25

I thought I’d record my journey both here and in my little diary. To spare you all from having to read 365 posts of me being bad at Hex Crawling I think I’ll split my posts into weeks covering what I do. There is a good chance I won’t stay on top of the daily schedule but we will see how we go.

My buddy Van Dorne from Building Paper Mountains shared the idea with us in our friendly discord and as always I jumped straight in. Anything he does is usually worth the effort.

Now, I am notoriously bad at journalling, and this is amplified by journaling games so we will have to see how long this lasts. I am getting a kick out of the dopamine from completing things lately though so hopefully I will have a body of work when we are done and this will be fun.

I also have never done any hex crawling before so this will be entirely new to me. I am aware that the full extent of a hex crawl isn’t really explored in the default way #Hexcrawl25 is being promoted so I am giving myself a bit of wiggle room to be lazy with it, prioritising the hexes over the story.

My Procedure lifted Straight out of the AD&D DMG

I haven’t really decided just how I want to approach it yet. A big part of me wants to tie it to something I know, the already established world of Mystic Times. But I am also aware that the point of the hexcrawl is exploration and discovery of something new. So we will have to see just what I do with it. I had mentioned to Van Dorne that I have been thinking of doing a pocket realm so I think we might go for something like that.

Ultimately I’d love for this to become something that helps me with some writing activities. One thing I want to do is get more familiar with the structure of timekeeping in Mystic Times. As such I have mapped out the months of the year and the days of the tenday to help keep track of the journey. At the very least it will help me track how many days I missed. Haha. At any rate I’ll learn the week names off by heart. Haha.

I have a lovely little vinyl bound journal that i am working with and I have cut out a hexagon ready to be traced 319 times. I also printed out the hexgrids for region mapping that were available from Maatlock. I modified them a bit so that the letters corresponding to the regions went clockwise starting from 12 o clock rather than the seemingly random 9 oclock start they did before with counter clockwise rotation. My brain couldn’t handle the unintuitiveness of it. Haha.

So that’s where I stand here today, the 30th of December. I hope if you also do Hexcrawl25 you’ll share your work with us all and we can all make stuff together.

Ciao for Now!
